I think that went rather well.
[ It's said with as much courtly decorum as Alexandrie can manage, the which is only slightly damaged by her being bent over with her hands braced on her knees, panting with exertion. And the hair that escaped unevenly from the sturdy braid wrapped and pinned tightly to her head. And the blood.
(There's a lot of blood.)
After another moment there she straightens up and walks to the nearest of the erstwhile smugglers and bends again, although this time it's to retrieve the knife buried in the body's chest rather than to rest. ]
Yes?

which was slightly less dignified than the quite good shooting she was doing beforehand. )
Headcount says it did, ( she says, dry; the number of slavers dead vs the number of captives they have managed to not get killed in the crossfire, both numbers being, respectively, all of them. )

Alexandrie is having her own undignified moment right now: the knife is firmly lodged in a rib, and when she finally gets it free the amount of force and the angle it required means she goes stumbling backwards with a little yelp of alarm.
Once she's righted herself: ]
Build them a pyre or leave them?
[ It's a bit of an ugly question, but this is a bit of ugly business. ]

How much damage do you think we'd do if we just burned the house?
( the math she's doing in her head is fairly obvious: a housefire might cover their immediate tracks as they gather up their rescued ducklings and extract them to safety. on the other hand, if it spreads — they came here to rescue slaves, not burn down seere.
still, the sort of property made for holding captives discreetly isn't exactly backed arse-to-arse with its neighbors. there's potential here, and not just because gwenaëlle is always in favor of burning things down where possible. )

It's not a bad idea. It's unlikely to damage the surrounding land: there's not much of a wind today, and there's not a great deal of close brush. It will certainly send anyone who spots it toward the building itself rather than after them. But also— ]
There is the matter of what else of value may be left inside.
[ Which isn't a no to burning the place down. ]
If we take the time to check the property, we might liberate more than these. Perhaps during their captivity our new wards might have seen a hiding place or two and I cannot imagine them unwilling to aid in obtaining moveables that might aid their rebellion or allow them to start free life on better footing.
[ Knife goes back in sheath. ]
And if there is any in there, I should rather fence artwork than think it destroyed. Think you we have the time?

We'll definitely sell them on the idea quicker if we're willing to split some of the take so they're not going home empty-handed, ( she agrees, finally. )
But, ( of the art, ) within reason, Lexie.

[ It's accompanied by the kind of bright and winning smile that has made people very literally trip over themselves to oblige her. Alexandrie knows very well it has no such effect on Gwenaëlle— unless it's to render her even more recalcitrant— which means she's just being impossible for long enough to have it register before the affect is discarded for one of more standard cheer. ]
Mais oui, madame, we can be tyrannical critics and decide what ought to be let to burn. No statuary unless truly priceless, paintings sans frames, rare books unless we hate the author, rare wines unless we hate the vintage; loose gemstones and jewelry first, coin for our new acquaintances for the ease of it?
[ She's looking over her shoulder by the end of her list, already starting to walk towards the little group of the newly freed to inform them that looting and arson are in the happy futures of those who would like to help everyone start their new lives on the right foot (financially speaking).
Let's go shopping~! ]

( more graciously, as gwenaëlle follows after her, conscious of the way that alexandrie does slightly manage her predisposition to being fucking recalcitrant and deciding to ignore it. though, after a beat: )
We'll go first, ( she explains to their new wards, gesturing between herself and alexandrie, ) and you don't go anywhere that we haven't already double-checked is clear.
( if they make an oddly-matched pair, and a curious choice for more or less the entirety of this task: her stubbornness on this point is clear. she isn't risking losing one of them to carelessness at this late stage, not when they've been so successful so far. if anyone had hidden—
well, they'll find them first. )

It's always interesting going through a place again when one is not embroiled in a general brawl. For some reason, Alexandrie always has the urge to right chairs that had been knocked over, cluck over the ruined finish on end-tables that had been used as shields. It matters even less than usual, as they're going to burn down the house, but even so she finds herself going so far as to reshelve a few fallen texts as she methodically checks a bookcase in the office to see if she can find any secret panels within it. ]
How is the storeroom coming? [ Called gaily down the hallway as she goes, ] Are there any— ha!
[ It's a noise of delighted triumph over sliding wood... and then, quickly following, a yelp of surprise and the sounds of a scuffle. ]
