"If that's not something you can stomach, say so now. I'll personally guarantee that your days become infinitely simpler."
There's plenty of manual labor to be done in the Gallows, and brainless murdering work that requires nothing more than the willingness to put an arrow in a person.

"doubt even you could make my life simpler." He mumbles mostly to himself.
and then louder, "Made the wrong call." He knows that's what he needs to say.
"Should've done what you told me." He means it and that's where he should stop, but instead he continues,
"Don’t know how to not care about my comrades though. If that means I don’t have the stomach, then maybe you're right."

"Are you suggesting that I'm not appropriately concerned for the welfare of the people under my command?"

"No!" is his initial response of frustration. Here he is fucking it up again and everything he says it making it worse. He takes a long breath, trying to figure out how to untangle this knot.
"Was trying to say that 'm not trying to--to--" to what? He cringes inwardly at his inability to speak clearly. He takes another breath. Just spit it out, Edgard!
"Didn't mean to not listen or fuck up the mission, even though that's what happened, trying protect someone I thought was about to get killed."
And maybe now Edgard is going to be killed. Maybe it would be easier than this conversation.
