Her lips part, surprise at something that (coming from a human, coming from someone she doesn't know) sounds like it might be meant very cruelly. You are small sounds like it might well have a double meaning, an unkind double meaning. So she gapes a moment, then pulls into herself, making herself even smaller in her self-consciousness.
