[CLOSED] WHAT'S YOURS IS MINE

WHO: Tertia, Ellis, Barrow, Clarisse, Tiffany, Ellie
WHAT: Riftwatch agents raid a Venatori red lyrium mine with the intent to disable the operation and kill the Venatori mage overseeing the work.
WHEN: Now-ish; whenever that makes sense.
WHERE: The Blasted Hills, the Anderfels
NOTES:
OOC information is available HERE at the sign-ups post. The objective/points pool spreadsheet with relevant instructions is located HERE and should be open to editing. Please include any necessary content warnings in your subject lines. If you want some image inspo for a medieval fantasy mine, there's a great reference HERE.

THE BRIEF
As Riftwatch is currently divided between the Gallows and a gloomy Hightown mansion in Kirkwall, the assembly (with their gear and their griffons already prepared) meets in the old Qunari compound turned Riftwatch stable yard on the Kirkwall docks to receive their assignment in person. With paper at such a premium these days, the only written copy of the orders is sent with them rather than filed among the towers' records. There is a silent implication not to lose it. Neither Flint or Julius is keen to reproduce it from memory.

That sheet reads:
For Immediate Dispatch,

Members of Forces and Project Sashamiri are to proceed to the foothills above Alhoven. Reports suggest the trading post there supports a nearby mining operation in the Blasted Hills, and that supplies are typically conveyed to and from by a mule team with a distinct spotted animal among them.

Follow the team and its return to the mine. From a reasonable distance, assess the state and organization of their work. Intercepted correspondence suggests the operation is being overseen by Augustus Naevius, a Venatori mage. What other opposition forces may be present is unclear. Upon completion of your evaluation, proceed to: disable and destroy the workings of the mine and its overseers; to recover any items or records of value; and then, to make your withdrawal.

Supplementary: should any opportunity present itself to damage the reputation of Tevinter in the region, or to discourage Alhoven from further trade relations with the Venatori, see it done.

-J. Flint

Rather than attempt to assess the value of any notes or correspondence, bring back anything you can reasonably secure without compromising the primary objective of disabling and destroying the mine. Even if a document turns out to be relatively useless, we can at least use the reverse side to supplement our paper supply.

- Julius

ALHOVEN
The village of Alhoven began life as a trading post. Nestled at the base of a rugged cut of the Blasted Hills, it primarily serves to supply logging, mining, and itinerant trappers with a line back to the wonders of civilization: hot meals cooked by someone else, protection both from the elements and the dangers of the wilderness, and carnal satisfaction for purchase. Observation or stealthy investigation may reveal the additional following information:
  • Alhoven is currently hosting a modest detachment of Tevinter infantry.
  • The village's central square, likely the footprint of the original trading post, is reasonably well fortified thanks to a wooden palisade. While it has no formal gates or portcullises, there is only one distinct (albeit unguarded) point of entry.
  • A watchtower on the edge of town hosts a lookout, and braziers are kept burning at night to illuminate the main thoroughfares of the village. It's rare to see individuals in the streets alone after dark. A series of traps found in the foothills above the village where Riftwatch is stationed suggests there's been recent trouble with bears or wolves.
  • The population skews older and rougher, with a majority qualifying as seasonal. That said, the village has begun to sprawl outward and there are signs that the rough and tumble lifestyle of the remote outpost may soon shift toward a more hardily domestic one. There is at least one very cute Anderfels baby bundled up against the winter weather, and one of the permanent structures is a Chantry chapel.
  • The lack of agricultural infrastructure buried under snow and ice suggests Alhoven is entirely reliant on trade and its collected stores. They don't appear to be doing poorly for themselves.

THE MINE
The targeted red lyrium mining operation isn't much of a journey from Alhoven up and into the unforgiving Blasted Hills. Composed of just a few permanent triangular outbuildings and an array of equipment, the mine isn't all that expansive. What it is, however, (in total defiance of the weather and cold), is awfully productive. Careful observation, stealthy investigation, or the general chaos of the melee may reveal the following details:
  • The camp's workforce predominantly consists of animated corpses being controlled by the Venatori mage overseeing the operation, Augustus Naevius. While it would ordinarily be impossible for a single necromancer to accomplish so much on his own, those familiar with other cases of corpses being animated and directed by the power of red lyrium may easily rationalize that's how Naevius is managing as well as he is.
  • There are no more than ten non-corpses guiding the work, including the driver of the mule train. Where the animated dead are responsible for the bulk of picking and shifting stone down in the pit mine and for driving the treadmills of the various heavy machinery, the living workers are responsible for the finer work of keeping everything running smoothly. It's impossible to tell from observation if these harbitten living workers are non-mage soporati, mages in their own right, Tevinter soldiers who have become too apathetic to wear much of their armor, or enslaved men and women with a considerable amount of autonomy. That said, they are living in an apparent abundance of comfort. No one seems to be going cold or hungry, although the mood is deadly (ha ha) serious.
  • The majority of the corpses are Anderfels natives. Though the residents of Alhoven must be unaware of it, it's likely that this, rather than hungry wildlife, may be the actual cause motivating the anti-predator precautions being taken in the village.
  • There are also a number of corpses wearing Tevinter armor/fashions.
  • In what is probably a totally unrelated note (it's definitely related), there are three bunkhouses in the compound. Only one seems to currently be in use for that purpose; the others have been turned into a barn and storehouse.
  • The animated corpses work day and night without rest, overseen by living workers in rotating shifts. Naevius himself spends most of his day repairing damaged members of the undead workforce, re-allocating the division of undead labor, consumed with some weird red lyrium experimentation, or shut up in the outbuilding that serves as his quarters-slash-office (where through a window he can be seen to be feverishly writing).

Once the attack kicks off, it will quickly become apparent that Naevius is as dangerous as he is industrious. To make matters worse, if he isn't taken out of commission quickly, Riftwatch members will soon find themselves facing an army red-lyrium infested undead; if Naevius is successfully killed, the red lyrium will continue to make the spirits possessing the undead aggressive, but they'll be much easier to corral, kill, or weaponize without someone guiding them.

There had been some consideration as to how they would know the right moment to strike. If Ellie or Tiffany should send word by crystal, if they should wait, if they should try to time it.

As it turns out, there is little need. The moment of their success is made very clear in the reaction of the corpses. A shuddering jolt runs through the hoard of them, their tools clanking against stone, chunks of red lyrium dropped to the dirt. Lit red by the lyrium, their blank faces are all the more unsettling for the pinch of reaction that shifts inert features. The five guides seem puzzled at the disruption, a murmuring of consultation between three as two descend to restore order.

"Now," is only a murmur, Ellis straightening from his crouch. The corpse shambling by, pushing a rattling, emptied cart along the tracks into the depths of the mine swiftly meets the heavy, spiked end of Ellis' mace and crumples.

Attention shifts. A shout, then another, in furious Tevene. Time to get to work.

It's on one of the living foremen that Barrow advances with a murderous glare, stepping from behind Ellis with his hammer clasped firmly and at the ready. It's not the most delicate weapon, difficult to wield without swinging widely at a broad range of enemies, so for the time being he just plows forward in an effort to intimidate his quarry away from the thralls, where they'll be harder to control.

He casts a Silence just in case as he elbows a confused corpse away.

Tertia, meanwhile, takes a breath, and plants her feet, and summons fire. The flames roar forth and create a wall, cutting off the monsters' escape - and the bosses' escape - hemming them in for the others to pick off. Controlling the crowd.

Her spellcasting is, for the moment, easy and measured and well-controlled. This is a good thing; flames in a lyrium mine can get dangerous indeed. But these flames remain clear of any veins of lyrium, avoiding any damage to the volatile substance.

Ellie | OTA

[personal profile] notathreat 2023-03-16 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
i. Camping (one on one)

It's very clear that they are supposed to be sleeping, and specifically Ellie is supposed to be sleeping, given that it's not her watch. Instead she lays there in her bedroll, staring up at the frost-covered canopy with bleary eyes, lips moving soundlessly as she picks out familiar constellations.

Usually, this helps. She's exhausted, and they're far enough away from the Gallows that whatever fucked up thing happening with people's dreams shouldn't be as much of an issue... but she still can't sleep. She rubs at her eyes as quietly as she can, and rolls to her side.

Not much luck there, either. So as quietly as she can, she wriggles out of her bedroll, picks up a spare blanket and brings it with her, deciding to go find whoever's on watch.

She sits down next to them, settling her bow across her lap, drawing the blanket around her shoulders

"Can't sleep," she murmurs. "How's it looking out here?"

ii. Denny's Danny's (one on one or drop-ins welcome for mingling)

"Holy shit," Ellie's muttering, looking over the plate the barmaid's set down in front of her -- two pancakes, two eggs, two sausages, two strips of bacon. She's usually dressed nondescript anyway, and being bundled up helps with appearing as a nondescript traveler. And nondescript travelers usually visit the local alehouse for a hot meal and the lay of the land.

Apparently the alehouse also serves breakfast after dark, and Artie's been real picky about his treats lately, hissing at Ellie's offerings of jerky now that he's become spoiled by a near-daily offering of bacon or sausage.

Ellie had ordered "the special", and apparently this was it.

"Fuck, I'm not actually sure I can eat all this," she whispers, even as she discreetly wraps up some of the meats in a napkin to secret it away in her pocket for later.

"Dark."

Even if his face is mostly hidden in shadow, the smile in Barrow's voice is as clear as the bright burning end of the cigarette he's smoking. He's seated on a fallen log, his broad back to the fire and covered in a heavy blanket of his own as he gazes out into the blackness.

After a companionable pause, he clears his throat quietly.
"You ever seen red lyrium?"

"Exciting."

Ellie's voice is a lower register, softer and easily lost in the crackling of the fire, so it hopefully won't wake any of their companions. All of them that are managing to sleep, anyway.

She grows grim instead at the question.

"Not up close," she admits. "Ellis and I were part of the group that found the tainted stuff that came from this mine, but it looked normal. We never would have known if Ellis hadn't sensed something off about it. But I've read about some of the things that happened in the reports from before I got here. About the Satinalia attack. And about Corypheus's dragon."

For Clarisse (battle aftermath, cw: injuries)

[personal profile] notathreat 2023-04-01 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The fight's bloody, firey, and ultimately successful. All of them are licking their wounds, collecting themselves after the clash with varying success.

Ellie has some of her own to deal with, but nothing immediate or pressing. Adrenaline's high, and they make it nearly back to camp before Ellie realizes that the back of Clarisse's light plate armor has dent and deep gouge in it... and that it's slowly growing dark and shiny with blood.

"Shit," she whispers, catching up to her and laying a hand on her back, over the wound. "Clarisse." Ellie pulls her hand back, shows her her palm, streaked with crimson.

"You're bleeding."

[personal profile] laruetheday 2023-04-01 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Clarisse slows, half turning to look at Ellie. Her eyes widen at the sight of so much blood on her palm, and she reaches up trying to feel along her back. Can't quite reach, but she can feel the edge of the spot where her armor broke, and the way it's gone slick all the way down to the small of her back. Her own fingers come away red.

She remembers getting hit—the heavy thunk of the axe hitting her armor as she just barely skirted out of the way, and how she'd even thought that was close before continuing on. Her adrenaline had been high, and there'd been no time to stop and check out what at the time had seemed like nothing.

Huh. Guess that was a mistake.

"We're almost back at camp," she mutters. "We can take care of it there."

She's not dumb enough to say "I" with Ellie right next to her, knows there's no way that Ellie will let her find an isolated spot and try to fix it up by herself.

Barrow OTA

I. Camping

Regardless of a mission's nature, Barrow always enjoys this aspect of it: the fire-building, the shelter-erecting, the rough cooking. He gladly takes on the task of homemaker in whatever capacity is needed, and can be found in turns cursing jovially at tinder that won't light, helping the less outdoors-inclined pitch their tents, and doing his best to zhuzh up whatever materials they've brought along for meals.
It's all a distraction, if a pleasant one; when his turn comes to stand watch and be alone with his thoughts, he takes on a more serious edge, a cigarette clamped in his mouth and a hard set to his brow.

"Quiet night?"

Tiffany is little early for her watch. If it were someone else that she was relieving, she might bide her time with some other little chore or activity, and wait on her approach--but as it's Barrow, she feels comfortable enough to talk with him in the minutes between the changeover. She approaches with a smile. The primary light is the firelight that is behind them, kept low so they are not discovered. Their shadows stretch out across the snow.

It's not that Barrow owes anyone an apology, but sometimes it's best to act as though he does, especially when the people to whom he doesn't exactly owe apologies are mages and have Mage Feelings. Maybe Tertia doesn't know about him, maybe she does, but either way it's better to start things out on the peaceful side of things, which he does by bringing her a heavy blanket.

"You really ought to dress for the weather," he chides gently as he offers it out.

"Will you help me?"

Tiffany, on her way out of the camp, stops beside Tertia. It is some time after the discussion. She has been keeping an eye on her, hunched at the edge of the camp like a little statue--not out of apprehension, but out of concern. The decision was made against her, and against someone she called a friend. That is not an easy thing.

i- camping.
Tiffany isn't as accomplished a camper as someone might assume. She at least knows the basics--how to pitch a tent, how to gather firewood and water--and she can make a fire manage to do a bit of cooking--but it's really best left to someone else, and she would be first to admit it. Her background has had her posted at keeps and well-supplied to complete her work. The most notable exception to this is one that the weather has her thinking of. The snow, the bitter cold, even the smell of the ice when it melts in the pale sunshine that comes in the morning. It turns her pensive, and the weight of what there are here to do only adds to that mood.

She's quick to stifle those feelings. When it is her turn to take watch at night, she is on time and takes her shift without protest, usually offering her own blanket to whoever she is relieving. It's standard Riftwatch issue, interchangeable from the others--but already warmed, so a shame to let it go to waste. "Anything to note?" is her companionable question, as she settles in for her shift.

It's Tiffany who suggest that they go in small groups to gather firewood or draw water, or any other task that would have them away from the camp for any period of time. There's always risk being on one's own. In fact, while gathering firewood one morning, Tiffany straightens up and looks around.

"Do you hear that?"

Ellie's fingers are cold, bundled up as she is, and she's taking a moment to breathe on them as they gather up firewood. There are snowflakes in her hair, a good pile of firewood between her and Tiffany.

At the sound in the trees, the snapping, the huffing, Ellie goes very quiet and very still, freezing where she is. They're wearing dark Riftwatch-issue clothing against the white of the snowy world, makes them easy to spot in the morning light.

"Yeah," Ellie whispers, stealing closer to Tiffany through the underbrush, coming within arm's length of her. If it's someone from the quarry they need to be ready to disappear, but that's unlikely.

But it doesn't sound like that.

Scouting should be done in pairs too, perhaps, but Ellis had gone up on his own astride Butterball some hours ago for last looks. To assess the movements of the camp, to be certain there had been no change they may need to be aware of.

It is poor luck (the boredom of unoccupied soldiers traveling back and forth between the mine and the town) that sees a volley of arrows directed upwards from a longbow at a suspicious shadow in the clouds.

It is good luck that Butterball did not plummet from the sky, that the arrows struck deep but not fatally, not in either wing.

Ellis had heard the cackle of laughter and dismissive jokes drift upwards as they wheeled higher, up and away. But they'd been obliged to dive into the trees sooner than he'd have liked, Butterball unable to make the entire journey back. And once landed, Ellis isn't inclined to force Butterball to walk until the arrows have been drawn out and the wound patched. It is a short distance from there to camp, but Ellis makes it at a run.

"Lady Seeker," comes out of the dark, before Ellis himself is discernable in the glow of the fire. "I need a second set of hands."

PLANNING TIME.

[personal profile] incaenstrix 2023-03-15 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"We mustn't - "

Tertia's voice is very small, and very soft, when she tries to get everyone's attention. She and Clarisse have just returned from their scouting mission; they've slipped into the campsite at a time when the others are having a full conversation, too quietly to be noticed, and now her quiet voice isn't enough to be remotely audible over anyone else's.

She's been quiet on the whole way back. To be fair, she hadn't spoken too very much to Clarisse on their way towards the scouting mission - shyness, not standoffishness - but ever since they saw their target, she's been completely silent. And so Clarisse will have no context at all as to what Tertia about to say, or why she casts a desperate glance over at Clarisse, seeking her help to get everyone else's attention.

Something is wrong.

Clarisse doesn't know what it is, and Tertia hasn't told her. Hasn't talked at all the whole way back, in fact. On the way out, she'd been okay—not super chatty, but Clarisse hadn't been expecting her to be, and it'd been fine. But in between then and now, something's changed. Clarisse has a feeling she's about to find out what at the same time everyone else does.

Tertia gives her a desperate, sidelong look—nobody's noticed their return yet despite her weak attempt at getting their attention—and Clarisse steps out beside her but positions herself the slightest bit forward, like she's prepared to defend them both, without really thinking about it.

"Hey." Clarisse's voice manages to be just gruff and loud enough to catch the attention of anybody nearby. "We're back."

Ellie, who's been lingering near the outskirts of camp, shows up almost immediately. She's been out scouting other parts of the area, and she's relieved to see them back.

It's not Tertia's body language that gives her pause immediately, it's Clarisse's. Mostly because Ellie knows her better, and she knows when she's feeling protective towards somebody. Not that Tertia doesn't inspire it in most people, but. It's new among their group.

"Hey," she says back, looking between the two of them.

"What'd you see?"

DECISION TIME.

[personal profile] heorte 2023-04-01 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is irresponsible to leave them," Ellis is saying, slightly muted as he twists his helmet up and off his head. Sweat has made a wild riot of his hair. The gore spattered across his armor is turned garish even by the distant glare of the red lyrium piled in heaps some distance from them at the low end of the incline.

The corpses that remain, this endless supply of puppeteered flesh, groan in response to the words. The sounds come drifting up to them. Ellis grimaces, turning fully to survey their party, assess the varying levels of exhaustion and injury.

How long can a corpse live now that the mage animating them is gone? Long enough to create a problem. Long enough, perhaps, to be reclaimed and redirected.

"We have direction," telegraphs some shadow of what Ellis is thinking of. They had all read the Commander's letter.

"Then we don't have to," comes Barrow's weary reply, as he props himself up by the elbow with the haft of his warhammer. "They can be managed as they are, eh? Why not give them a proper sendoff. Let the dead be dead."

"I'm all for killing them for good," Ellie says, her arms crossed over her front. But she giving Ellis a funny look; she's not sure if she's following him, but if she is, she really doesn't like it.

"They're dangerous to anyone, and if the Venatori find them, they'll use them all over again."

They've all at least heard about Ellie's world, and how similar the infected were to this.
